It's not really baking, but...

I'm going to be writing a section for my college newspaper every month about interesting recipes for college students to try!! : D And I have a resolve to try every recipe I write about before I write the article.

They won't all be baked goods, in fact I'll be making fried chicken for my family tonight, but I'll still share them all the same!

Cake Balls!

My wonderful boyfriend had a birthday this past weekend, and even though I basically gave him a gift early (Death Note stuff), I'm not sure if he knew if he was going to get a gift or not. He probably expects it by now though, since I bake for him almost every time I give him a present. This was no exception.

Since I wanted to only carry a small box of them (because it was easy to carry), I gave most of the cake balls to my family. And they really loved them. This time around, I baked at my aunt's house, so I had plenty of people to feed. And it took so much time to finish these, I wouldn't recommend making these the day of your events.

The recipe is super easy. I don't really have a reference for this one, since I basically read a few different ones, and talked with my genius baker friend, so this will be coming off the top of my head.

To make these, you will need:
1 box of cake mix
1 can of icing
1 package of chocolates
1 double boiler, or a melting pot
Forks and spoons?? Either works fine.

The instructions are fairly simple as well!

1) Prepare and bake the cake mix as if you were making a normal cake. After the cake is finished baking, let it sit and cool for at least half an hour, or until the cake isn't very warm.
2) Crumble the cake, to fine grains of sand as my friend calls it. You can remove the crusts, it is optional, but not needed. I did for my cake balls because the crusts were harder and they were darker than the rest of the cake.
3) Mix in 3/4 of the icing with the crumbled cake.
4) Roll a small pinch into a ball, set on a plate, and repeat. Freeze all of the balls in the freezer until they are almost firm to the touch.
5) Melt the chocolate, then dip your cake balls in the melted chocolate after pulling them straight from the freezer.
6) Set aside! If your cake ball is still cold, the chocolate should set quickly.
7) Serve! Watch them disappear.

1 box of cake mix should give you over 50 cake balls if you roll them into bite sized balls. I made two boxes, and my family ate all of the cake balls I made in two days, so I'm guessing they tasted good. I highly recommend letting them sit over night because the chocolate is completely firm and for some reason, it tasted better to me (this could also be my food intake that day, which was mainly cake balls and pizza).

Fun fact: I let my chocolate sit for a bit without melting, so the spoon actually got stuck inside. It was fun to convince my two younger cousins that I was performing magic. :D

I hope this recipe is helpful for you, and let me know how the recipe works out for you!!

Cupcakes!

As promised, here are some pictures of the cupcakes [s]my mom[/s] made last week. They were made for one of my classes, and my fellow students really loved them. : )
Also, the pictures are for Keith on Subeta. He said he wanted cupcakes, even if these are super late. xD

Check out Subeta! It's a lot of fun!

EDIT: Keith, if you're reading this, I'm sorry I spelled your name wrong the first time. D :

It's been a while. : (

It's been a long time since I posted anything to any blog. Life... it gets to be pretty busy, so much that you don't really have the time to enjoy what you love the most. (I know, I'm expecting to dive into a new anime series by the end of next week.) But I plan to update soon, just wait. I'll even add a special blog about cupcakes, maybe this weekend, since I do have a few days off next week. : )

I'm sorry there's been a lack of updates, but I'll try to keep up with more as my summer vacation approaches.

Recipe Book! : D

I went to my local Borders today because they're closing *cries*, but I picked up this cute book for about $10! I'm not sure how I'm going to organize it, since there are four sections. I'm thinking something along the lines of Cakes, Cookies, Sweets and Yummy Treats, and Pastries. I'm still not quite sure what to do with it yet.

I also bought a treat related book that I'll probably share on my craft blog, which I should really update. xD

OK, this is real melonpan

When I told my friend I was going to make melonpan, he gave me the recipe in the last post. Of course, that's NOT real melonpan. xD So I ended up making the real thing to give my family.

There are two reasons I decided to make this recipe. One, because I found the recipe on a YouTube channel called Cooking with Dog, and it looked simple enough to try. Also, when I showed my mother, who has been working like a dog in the past month, she told me she wanted to try it, so I decided to make it for her. Originally, it was going to be a surprise, but she found out anyway. And I even made sure she took a piece for lunch, because I know she gets so busy that she skips her lunch sometimes.

Gathering ingredients was easy. Except the dry milk powder used in the video. I had to buy a large box, for 1/4 tbs. Let's just say I'll be able to make lots of melonpan in the coming future. The yeast used in the recipe wasn't hard to find either, as I made bread back in November for thanksgiving. Other than that, I had the rest of the ingredients waiting at home.

The recipe used in Cooking with Dog was a direct Japanese recipe translated to English. The only problem was the measurements were still Japanese. So I had to estimate all of my measurements. Which resulted in sticky cookie dough, and bread dough that took much longer to make due to an unknown amount of flour. And when I threw the bread in the microwave to ferment, it baked slightly, so I could not use it.

When these two pieces failed me, I wondered what I could do. I googled another recipe, this time with translated measurements, and the results were much better. : ) There were a few things I tweaked from the original, like I didn't add as much flour because my bread dough was barely able to hold what it already had, and I forgot to add the vanilla extract to the cookie dough. I also followed some of the instructions from the video, which turned out fine. Even with these changes, accidental or not, the result was great. Even if I ran out of cookie dough.

This is what we call "Melon Pan"

This is a bit of a preview for the next update. xD

Welcome to my baking blog!!

(I guarantee I will use the title somewhere in this post)
At least for now, that is what it is. xD I have decided to transition to a baking blog, where I show off the creative and tasty treats I have cooked up lately. Right now, I have many things to show off, but not a whole lot of pictures. Therefore, I suppose this post will have to do. : ) But I'm looking forward to sharing my culinary creations (ha, there it is)!! I will post recipes sometimes, and how I tackled them. So enjoy!!
